What does the 'end' of Windows XP really mean to you?

Most people by now have gone beyond Windows XP to Windows 7 or Windows 8 (let’s not talk about Vista, ok?). Lately there has been a lot of talk about the ‘end’ of Windows XP. Hey, it had a great run and was one of Microsoft’s best efforts and most stable operating systems. A lot of people still like Windows XP, just do not want to upgrade, or cannot afford to upgrade their computers, and that’s ok.

What the ‘end ‘ really means is that on April 8th, 2014 Microsoft will no longer put out any software updates to the operating system. Yes, it will still run on your computer. No, it will not suddenly stop working. I’ve had a lot of people asking me if their computer will just stop working and that is not the case. It just means that you will not receive any more updates from your Windows Update program. You have to keep in mind that this means no more security updates that can help to plug any security holes found in XP that might allow viruses, spyware, or malware into your system. You also will not receive any more fixes to any little bugs that might stop Windows XP from functioning.

One other thing, Windows XP will only run up to Internet Explorer 8. Right now Internet Explorer is at version 11. What that means is that as websites change and are updated to work with newer programming on the newer versions of the browser, when you go to that site it might now work quite right for you. Of course you can always look into Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome as an alternative.

So there is no need to go rushing out to Best Buy or Costco to get that newest of computers unless you really feel the need.
