When it comes to getting your business found on the Internet some believe that you should have either a business website OR a Facebook page for your business. Both have pros and cons, but in reality, if you want to be the most effective you can for your business, you should be using both because each can do very different things. Sometimes it depends on what you want to do and what you want to focus on.
A website can have the things that are rarely changing like your mission statement or other things that you want your potential clients to know that do not change that often. The Facebook page can then have upcoming events listed, sales, or just up-to-date articles or posts. Things that change constantly. If done right you can incorporate these into your website as well.
With a Facebook page, there is less cost than a website and it can be easier to build and maintain than a website. With a website, there is the cost of the development as well as the domain and hosting fees. Don’t just use the costs to make a decision that could hurt your business in the long run.
Be in control
While a Facebook page can be easy to work with, you don’t have the same amount of control of how things look or where they go. You are at the mercy of what Facebook is doing. If they decide to eliminate any type of business, you could be out with little or no warning. Not long ago they also did some changes that limited the reach of business pages. If you have both a Facebook page AND a website, then you are more in control since you control the website. Remember, you never know when a social media site will change how it is doing things and to could adversely affect your business if that social media is the only online presence you have for your business.
Your website should be your starting point, then do the marketing
If you have a website for your business it should be the ‘main’ start of your online presence. People should be able to find it and read about your business or get the information they need to determine if they want to involve themselves further with your business. Once that is established you can then market with social media and link the two together.
Remember, not everyone has a Facebook account or wants to get one. We have several clients do not want to use Facebook at all. They do all of their ‘Googling’ and look at just the websites while avoiding the Facebook pages. The is also evidence that if the site is informative, interesting, and interactive in some way users will stay on a website longer than on a Facebook page. The longer a user is on a website, the better the rankings of that website.
